Well-intended workplace interventions can go wrong due to their lack of tailored solutions to address the specific root causes of workplace mental health issues. Simplistic solutions such as relaxation classes, sleep, and meditation apps may not be effective in improving workforce wellbeing, according to a recent study by Oxford University researcher William Fleming.

Fleming argues that these interventions are personal management techniques that do not address the underlying problems in a highly stressful job like healthcare.

Dr. Alexandra Dobra-Kiel, Innovation and Strategy Director at behavioral consultancy Behave, agrees that the complexity of workplace mental health issues cannot be ignored, and simplistic approaches may not be effective in tackling root causes.

She warns that some interventions, such as employee volunteering activities, may offer some benefits to employees, while others, such as resilience and stress management training, can actually harm employees.

Workplace interventions must be tailored to address the specific root causes of workplace mental health issues, rather than relying on simplistic solutions that may not be effective.
