Film Movement has acquired the North American rights to the documentary “Agent of Happiness”. The company plans to release the film theatrically in 2024, as well as distributive it on digital platforms and in the home entertainment market. The documentary, directed by Arun Bhattarai and Dorottya Zurb, made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.

It went on to win audience awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Margaret Mead Film Festival. The film follows Amber and Guna Raj, who are not only close friends but also Happiness Agents working on behalf of Bhutan’s Ministry of Gross National Happiness. They collect data to create a five-year plan to increase the country’s Happiness Index.

The announcement was made by Michael Rosenberg, president of Film Movement, and Shoshi Korman… co-MD of sales agent Cinephil. Cinephil previously licensed the film for release in various countries, including the UK, Germany, Australia, and Italy. Variety’s review of the film praised its use of visual contrast to scrutinize Bhutan’s narrative about itself.
