Just before 1776, Benjamin Franklin wrote a series of newspaper letters advocating for Colonial resistance. The letters, full of wit and satire, helped to galvanize public opinion against British rule.
In another anonymous essay , he gave the British “advice” on how to ruin an empire: burden people with unnecessary taxes, ignore their petitions, and place a standing army in plain sight, among other tongue-in-cheek suggestions.
