The HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) has issued a stern warning to the first category C prison, citing a decade-long decline in conditions and standards. Following a recent inspection from August 12 to 22, the inspectorate revealed a plethora of issues plaguing the facility. In its report, HMIP described the conditions as “squalid” and “decrepit,” with infestations of rodents, including rats and mice, compromising the health and well-being of prisoners.

The inspectorate acknowledged that prisoners had resorted to constructing makeshift barriers from cardboard to attempt to keep vermin out of their cells. The urgent notification has been sent to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, as per the requirements of the Prisons and Courts Act 2007. This marks the seventh prison to receive such a notification since November 2022.

According to Sky News… the inspectorate’s findings suggest that the prison has failed to address long-standing concerns, “leading to a significant decline in its overall performance.” The situation has prompted calls for immediate action to rectify the issues and improve the ___ conditions for prisoners. As the Inspectorate’s report emphasizes, “it is essential to prioritize the welfare and safety of those incarcerated.”.. and the authorities must take swift and decisive measures to restore the prison’s credibility and reputation.
