Threets has always found solace in reading and has used it to cope with his mental health struggles. He has made it his mission to advocate for books, especially now that book bans have been implemented in many places.

For Mychal Threets, reading has always been a source of comfort and solace. Even as a young boy, he found himself lost in the pages of a book, escaping the stresses and challenges of everyday ___. As he grew older, reading became a vital coping mechanism, helping him navigate the ebbs and flows of his mental health journey.
When Threets struggled with anxiety and depression, he would often turn to a good book to calm his nerves and clear his mind. He credits reading with giving him a sense of purpose and direction, allowing him to channel his emotions into something positive. As Threets’ mental health struggles continued, he made it his mission to share the transformative power of reading with others.
He believes that books have the ability to break down barriers, foster empathy… and promote understanding – qualities that are desperately needed in today’s world. When Threets left his job as a librarian to focus on his mental health, he didn’t abandon his passion for books. Instead, he redirected his energy into advocacy work, using his platform to raise awareness about the importance of reading and literacy.
With the recent implementation of book bans in many places, Threets saw an urgent need to speak out against censorship and promote the value of literature. He believes that book bans are not only harmful to individuals, but also to society as a whole, as they restrict access to knowledge, ideas… and perspectives. Threets has become a vocal advocate for the preservation of library funding and the protection of intellectual freedom.
He has spoken at conferences, rallied online, and collaborated with authors and organizations to promote the importance of reading and literacy. Through his advocacy work, Threets aims to inspire a love of reading in others, while also promoting a culture of inclusivity and acceptance. By championing the power of books, Threets hopes to create a world where individuals can come together, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs, to explore, “learn,” “and grow together.”
