Her decision comes after her divorce from Bill Gates was announced in May 2021.

She acknowledged the transition, stating that “The time is right for me to move forward into the next chapter of my philanthropy,” highlighting her existing organization, Pivotal Ventures, which operates outside the nonprofit realm.

French Gates will continue to work on philanthropic efforts through Pivotal Ventures… an organization that she has led since 2014. Bill Gates, in a separate statement, thanked French Gates for her “critical” contributions to the foundation and acknowledged her continued impact in future philanthropic endeavors. As a result of the change, the foundation will rebrand as the Gates Foundation, a spokesperson confirmed.
