The ingress to the falls, situated at a distance of 2. 2 miles, is lined with trees, bridges, and picnic tables, affording inquisitive day-trippers a charming respite. As one traverses the well-marked trail, the hissing waterfalls, nestled amidst the lush foliage, eventually come into view, rendering the excursion a quintessential day-trip experience. For the avid explorer… this location serves as a springboard to embark on a series of mini-vacations, replete with opportunities to discover novel destinations, immersed in the rich heritage of North Dakota.

Be sure to take the right fork where the road branches off (left goes to the Oak Ridge Loop, a 1.3-mile trail) and take the right fork to the falls. It’s about 2.2 mile-hike over a tree-lined well-marked trail, passed bridges, picnic tables for day trippers and down to the source of the spring. Follow that trail to the waterfall.

A trip going any direction will bring you to small towns. Turn off and go look around. If you are looking for a weekender, check online atNorth Dakota scenic destinations, North Dakota Forests and Parks, or log onto the North Dakota Historical Society’s site and explore the many locations here, all within a day’s drive and some with camping areas nearby. There are Cold War-era missile sites, many Native-Indigenous sites and even areas where some important battles and decisions took place. The family can have a few mini-vacations that help to break up their summer while still getting to see and do something different.

One of my favorite day trips is turning off onto roads I’ve never been on to small towns. Some of the best food comes from small eateries run by mom-and-pop families located in out-of-the-way locations. Fun trips can also be had by stopping in thrift shops in small towns. Give the kiddos a few dollars and let them find a happy surprise purchase that will occupy them for a few days. Mini-vacations or day trips can give the entire family a new outlook on summer, educate everyone about some new place you never saw before and perhaps open the mind to exciting cultures.
