In The News:

After tough losses in each of the last twoMissouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association championship games, the Wildcats were finally able to claim that elusive first title Saturday afternoon with an 18-10 win over MICDS at Missouri Baptist University’s Spartan Field.

“This is like the best day ever,” Eureka senior midfielder Kylee Pickens said. “It’s really been building up. We were here my sophomore year and my junior year and finally I got to end my senior year with a win, which is so awesome. It’s super special to get to bring this to our school.”

Melissa Menchella is one of the most decorated players in Eureka girls lacrosse history and now she is leading the way as coach. So, she bleeds Wildcat purple and gold through and through and was thrilled to finally hold that first-place trophy.

“I don’t even know if I can possibly explain how excited I am and how excited all the girls are, and the community and fans and parents. It’s been such a hard road, and we had a hard path put on us having to get through John Burroughs and MICDS,” Menchella said. “It is a dream come true. We’ve been waiting for this day. The girls were working so hard. We scouted really, really hard and made them watch so much film. They’re so receptive to every kind of feedback. To see everything come together is just the pinnacle of anything I ever dreamed.”

Second-seeded MICDS (17-4) was making its 18th state championship appearance in the 24-year history of the tournament.

The Rams fell to 14-4 all-time in title game action. Despite missing out on their 15th state title, they were happy to be back in the final after falling in last year’s semifinals on the heels of two straight championships.

Perched just behind theMICDS bench — as it was all season — was last season’s misspelled “forth” place trophy the Rams used as motivation all year long.

Pickens got theWildcats on the board in quick fashion just 31 seconds into the game and Eureka would go on to a five-goal first quarter outburst in opening up a 5-2 lead.
